Have you heard the one about …….
- “I haven’t received the invoice”
- “I have lost the invoice”
- “The money isn’t due yet”
- “A cheque was sent out last week”
- “There is no one in accounts today”
- “We are still waiting for payment from contractors/suppliers to make payment before we can pay you”
- “We didn’t get the goods”
Common excuses we have all heard time and time again
You can avoid these excuses by having a clear cut credit control procedure:-
- Request a confirmation when you send out your invoice.
- Ensure your Terms and Conditions are very clear about your payment terms (for advice on best practice in your T’s and C’s follow this link).
- Whenever possible ask your client to pay by bank transfer – no more lost cheques or unpresented cheques. Ask them to clearly indicate the invoice number they are paying.
- If there is no one in the accounts department when you call, ask to speak to a manager / senior member of staff.
- Even if your client has not been paid, you have a statutory right to be paid according to your terms.
The Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998 was introduced for the purpose of compensating Creditors for the late payment of debts and to penalise those Debtors who exceed payment terms and misuse their supplier’s credit facilities.
At the heart of every business lies positive cash flow. When you get paid on time everything works as it should, but business can become more challenging when outstanding payments and money owed to you starts to mount up.
The Government and industry is calling on businesses to pay suppliers on time and for small firms to pursue those who put them at risk by delaying.
